Fundraising Countdown: What's At Stake

What's At Stake for App Camp

Today marks the beginning of the final week of the App Camp 3.0 crowdfunding campaign. The entire App Camp For Girls team has been cheered and honored by the incredible outpouring of support that we've received from the community.

I personally know many of you who have made such great efforts on our behalf. It means so much to me to have that backing. Before the July 1 deadline, can I ask you help us rally the support to get to our final goal? Here's why it's important.

More girls, more locations, more apps

We have 7 days to make it to our final goal of $100,000. We have big plans for 2016 and beyond, based on achieving this goal:

1) Reach more girls by establishing 4 new locations, in addition to the  locations we've already launched (Portland, Seattle, Vancouver). Enthusiastic local organizers have already been recruited. If we fall short of our goal, we will have no choice to cut back on the new 2016 App Camp For Girls locations.

2) Expand our curriculum. In our first three summers, we focused on teaching campers how to build a basic calculator app and a more complex quiz app. We want to challenge our campers with more apps and games. We also want to add the option for campers to do Apple Watch apps, if we meet our fundraising goals.

3) Create a sustainable organization. Almost everything that App Camp For Girls has achieved is the work of unpaid volunteers, myself included.  An organization like App Camp For Girls cannot operate indefinitely without a paid executive director and a paid curriculum developer. If we are to reach more girls and expand the curriculum, App Camp For Girls needs to professionalize.

The next seven days will determine what App Camp For Girls can achieve in 2015-2016. We are committed to continuing the program in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. We want to expand the number of locations and the curriculum to meet the incredible demand that's out there.

Will you help us to get to the finish line? Don't delay in making a donation, if you haven't yet. Share this with your friends and followers and let them know why you support the goal of more girls and women in tech.

Thanks so much,

PS. As many of you know, I was inspired to launch AC4G by the paucity of women at Apple's WWDC. This year, I saw women everywhere. Not a lot of women, but there is definitely a difference. App Camp For Girls played a small part in that: six of us were awarded WWDC scholarships this year. Check out the "before-and-after" photos from 2013 and 2015 at the WWDC Bash. :-)

PPS. A special shoutout to the listeners of Mac Power Users. Hosts Katie Floyd and David Sparks challenged their audience to raise $1000. As of today, 76 listeners have contributed $5935! We even worked out a special stretch goal for MPU: if 100 listeners contribute by July 1, I will personally challenge David Sparks to some kind of fun competition when he is in Portland for App Camp... and Periscope it. ;-)
