A message from App Camp For Girls founder, Jean MacDonald
Last year was another exciting one for App Camp For Girls – 2016 was our busiest season yet! To date, we have worked with 176 aspiring developers and 60 volunteers. We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished working towards our vision of gender equality in software development. We are already at work on the 2017 camp plans, to be announced soon. None of it would be possible without your support!
And because of your support, we are able to embark in 2017 on an ambitious plan to take AC4G to the next level as a nonprofit. Our board has begun a strategic planning process to assess our goals and how to best achieve them in the next three years. We will involve representatives from our whole community in the process in a variety of ways and we will keep everyone informed of what we discover as the process unfolds.
We know already our future plans include hiring professional staff. After four years of managing AC4G as a volunteer, I am handing the reins to a nonprofit executive who has the experience to take us to the next phase.
With the assistance of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon's Executive Transition service, we've hired Jill Kuehler as interim executive director. Jill was the director of Friends of Zenger Farm, an urban agriculture educational institution in Portland for seven years. She has since worked as an interim executive director helping other nonprofits transition, including Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, which was the model for AC4G. I love Jill's enthuasiasm and I know we will benefit from her broad expertise in growing a non-profit.
I'll be resuming my consulting work in software marketing, focused as always on the Apple developer and user community, but I will continue to be a leader as a board member, fundraiser, volunteer, and mentor. Grey Osten, AC4G co-founder, will continue to lead our team of amazing iOS developer/instructors designing and executing our curriculum. We have a lot of fun new things coming in 2017, such as Swift Playgrounds on iPad Pros.
On behalf of Grey and the App Camp Board of Directors, I thank you for everything you've done to get us to where we are today. We all look forward to working with you in 2017 and beyond.
Founder, App Camp For Girls
P.S. My special thanks to these companies who were leaders in our 2016 fundraising efforts: our Silver Sponsor, Possible Mobile, and our Bronze Sponsors, Mapbox, McMillan LLP, Radical I/O, Sketch App, and Smile. It means a lot to me to have the support of these leaders in our community, people whom I admire greatly.
